XVII Universiade, Kazan 2013

Universiade XXVII Kazan 2013

Student Sports Ireland, the forerunner to CUSAI, are sending a Men’s and Women’s Football squad to Kazan, Tartrastan, Russia to compete in the 27th Universiade (World University Games). www.kazan2013.ru/en

The tournament lasts from Friday 05th July – Wed. 17th July 2013

Both squads play 3 group matches and then 3 ranking games.

FISU and Universiades

Fisu, the Federation for International University Sports, oversees the biennial Summer and Winter  insists on a number of compulsory sports to take place during the Tournament, plus any sports that the local organisers deem suitable for their Tournament.  For Kazan it’s 10 compulsory sports including Athletics, Swimming and Football.  In Sports that are not covered in the Winter or Summer Universiades have there own World Championships through the calendar year.

Ireland Universities, as an All-Ireland squad represented by CUSAI, first competed at ‘World Student Games’ at Sheffield 1991.  With players including Packie Lynch, Ciaran Kavanagh facing up against USA’s Cobey Jones at Leeds Road, Huddersfield.  Jones later was to compete for USA at Olympic Games and World Cup.
