Come on You Boys in Green

The kick-off for the Republic of Ireland’s first Euro 2012 match against Croatia (Hrvatska) is nearly upon us. And an added bonus for League of Ireland FANS is the significant number of ex-League of Ireland players in the squad, represented right through the team.

David Forde (GK): A regular for Galway Utd. From 1999-2001 and promotion into the Premier Division after a move to England,he returned first on loan to Derry City for 2003 and then moved to Galway Utd. In 2004, he moved back to Derry for two seasons in 2005-2006 and won a FAI Cup medal after they St. Pats Athletic a remarkable rain-soaked Final at Lansdowne Road, the score after extra-time 4-3 to The Candystripes. Derry beat UCD on the way to winning that Cup.

Stephen Ward (D): Played nearly 100 games for Bohemians between 2003 and 2006. And went to Mick McCarthy’s Wolves for a League of Ireland record signing, believed to be around STG£100,000.

James McClean (M): Moved to Derry City from the Maiden City’s Irish League club Institute FC. After a representing Northern Ireland at Under-age level switched to the Republic of Ireland Senior team when FIFA clarified representation rules newly introduced. Has played at the UCD Bowl in a 2-2 draw in 2011.

Shane Long (F): Played a total2004 of 15 minutes with Cork City from 2004-2005 before moving with Kevin Doyle to Reading FC for €20,000.

Kevin Doyle (F):Star for St. Pat’s Athletic and then moved with Pat Dolan to Cork City, starred with the Leesiders before he was sold to Reading FC for an undervalued €80,000.

While the Airtricity League takes their Summer Break for the Euros and Annual Holidays, UCD FANS can relax and enjoy the football on show.
