FAI Senior Cup: UCD’s Scoreline History

UCD AFC’s matches in the FAI Senior Cup.

UCD AFC’s Historian Declan Hughes was a huge source of information for the details of this article.  Especially results and scorers from UCD’s years before joining the League of Ireland.  Without Declan collecting this knowledge, so much of UCD’s history would be lost.

The 2018 campaign brought more pride to UCD AFC with wins over Pike Rovers, CIE Ranch (our first triumph in a tie that went to extra-time) and Waterford FC in the quarter-finals.  There was huge excitement as First Division Champions UCD AFC traveled away to Oriel Park, but a wonder strike from The Lilywhites’ Pat McEleney just before half-time brought that great cup run to an end.

UCD lifted the trophy in 1984 against Dublin rivals Shamrock Rovers.  That campaign saw UCD play and win three times at Tolka Park. Joe Hanrahan 41 mins and Ken O’Doherty in 6th minute injury time brought the trophy to Belfield for the one and only time. UCD added to the 1984 triumph with another win over Shamrock Rovers at Tolka Park in 1988.   Bookending the Hoops three-in-a-row. The next best campaign was 2007 reaching the Semi-Final with wins over Salthill Devon, Dundalk FC and Derry City before losing to Premier Division bottom club Longford Town at Belfield Park.

2014 Sherriff YC‘s 3-1 win at UCD Bowl brought a proud record of never losing to a team outside of the League of Ireland to an end.

Our record has been very modest, UCD’s second ever match win in the competition was the year we lifted the trophy in 1984.  The expansion of the early rounds to include more clubs outside of the League of Ireland meant UCD improved the overall win rate.

UCD have played our first FAI Senior Cup game against Shamrock Rovers at their home ground of Windy Arbour in 1921/22. UCD AFC hosted their first FAI Senior Cup game against Bray Unknowns (1939).

Of course no History of UCD in the FAI Senior Cup would be complete without mentioning the UCD (Leinster Senior League) side that reached the FAI Cup through the Intermediate Cup in 2009 and UCD Fans enjoyed TWO UCD teams in the FAI Cup.  Since then the rules for the FAI Cup have changed so that UCD (LSL) are excluded from qualifying. When the UCD (LSL) team reaches the last thirty-two of the FAI Intermediate Cup the side they’re paired with qualifies for the FAI Senior Cup draw.

  1. To add to UCD AFC FAI Senior Cup History Pegasus FC the graduate team of UCD have also qualified for the FAI Senior Cup in their own right. In 1977 defender Kevin Moran caught the eye of Manchester United chief scout in Ireland Billy Behan at the game in Oriel Park. Moran was moved from central defence to left back to counter the threat of Dundalk winger Jimmy Dainty. Jim McLaughlin was player-manager of Dundalk and they won the FAI Cup that year.
